My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Void Rivals is a fast‑paced, emotionally charged space saga that balances personal transformation with cosmic-scale conspiracies, all while laying the groundwork for a sprawling shared universe of heroes, villains, and legacy.
The story begins with the somewhat familiar, but intriguing "trapped on a barren planet with your sworn enemy, whom you now have to cooperate with to survive" plot device and It was executed perfectly, immediately drawing my attention and engaging me in the narrative. As the story progresses, it expands beyond the barren planet and reveals some fascinating and unique world-building.
I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between the main characters, Solila and Darak. They are both well-developed and relatable, which made their interactions compelling. While I can't say the same for most of the secondary characters, it didn't diminish my enjoyment of the book, thanks to the strong writing overall.
The pacing of the story felt swift, moving the plot forward quickly and allowing me to read the entire book in one sitting. The art and character designs are unique, sharp, and detailed, featuring beautiful spreads that enhance the aesthetic feel and texture, which was perfectly suited to the Space Opera setting.
This book is part of the "Energon Universe," which includes other titles, but it can be easily read and appreciated on its own. The cameos from Transformers and GI Joe serve as a delightful bonus rather than a distraction.
Overall, it's a very good book and a perfect addition for any sci-fi space adventure Buff. I would rate it 4.2 out of 5.
