Absolute Wonder Woman Review

Absolute Wonder Woman (2024-) #1Absolute Wonder Woman (2024-) #1 by Kelly Thompson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Think Wonder Woman with all her basic abilities, but also a potent, magic-using witch. Like F*c# Yeah!

Diana is taken from Themyscira as a baby and dumped in hell(Tartarus) at the behest of Zeus. There she is raised, taught strong magic, and given a collection of formidable mythical weapons by the powerful witch Cerce in order to help her against the Olympian gods who trapped her, and assist in fulfilling her role of aiding humanity.

This concept is so cool and creative, the writing is amazing and the pacing is flawless. Everything from Diana’s childhood, the unique ways she uses magic when fighting, and the dynamic between her and the Gods felt very well thought out and properly executed, drastically altering the character's origin, but remaining true to her core (she’s still as selfless as ever). The story got me hooked from the first issue and has continued to impress with every subsequent release.

The art has been astounding, each panel beautifully detailed and spectacular almost jumping out of the book. The colors are stunning, complementing the darker setting but still managing to remain vibrant, and the character and monster designs are top-notch too. I love her overall goth-like look, and suit/armor, plus, the art style change in issue 6 was a very welcome surprise. The action is immersive, brutal, and gritty, perfectly portraying scale and motion.

Overall a gorgeous and immersive, almost addictive new take on an all-time classic, I loved this book and you should read it.

Can’t recommend this book enough, I don’t even like horror titles but this is one well-appreciated exception. It feels very Stranger Things-esque, but it’s a completely different story with a more mature and somber tone. All its characte...
